What it is
The military overpaid you at some point, and now it is taking the money back out of your paychecks. Common causes: BAH that kept paying at the wrong rate, special pay that continued after you left the qualifying duty, advance pay, or a travel voucher problem. GAO found overpayments sometimes sit undetected for up to two years before collection starts.
2026 rate
Collection is normally capped as a portion of your pay per month, and you can request a lower rate.
What goes wrong
You have rights here. You can request a breakdown of exactly what the debt is, dispute it if it is wrong, request a hardship reduction of the monthly collection, and in genuine cases of no-fault overpayment you can request a waiver of the debt. Do not just absorb a mystery debt line. Make them show the math.
